Avalanche Forecast Poems 2012-13

December 8, 2012

Wow what a start to early December—

With 100-inch snow depths things to remember.

A few weeks ago there was dirt and grass—

And now these are buried by snow at your pass.

Avalanche awareness has become more relevant—

As the snow overall is much less benevolent.

Human triggered soft slabs are giving surprises—

Though to date all that’s hurt have been ego down-sizes.

The rest of December will offer challenge and more—

Since avalanche danger has opened its door.

Recent snow up high is more drifted and dense—

And travel in higher lee terrain a bit more tense.

Although this weekend’s weather should become more benign—

The danger’s there and for increasing caution it’s time.

Don’t let the lure of pow dull your concern—

Or an avalanche lesson is what you’ll learn.

December 13, 2012

Up on the ridges this weekend,

increased winds are not your friend.

Along with moderate to heavy snow,

lots of loading will make slides go.

Then some warming Sunday late,

steep slope travel may tempt fate.

Ho Ho Ho, who wouldn’t go?

Up on the ridge to shred some snow?

Hopefully you and no doubt me,

as we don’t want any burials to see.

Weak layers formed early this week,

will be stressed not just tweaked.

Surface hoar from Thursday nite,

may also add to the sliding fright.

So use lots of care and caution try,

for the forecast danger should be high.

Hey, Hey, Hey, why not stay?

In controlled ski areas and play, play, play.

For if you go to the BC,

likely slabs are what should be.
